Cold Lake Incorporated in 1996 through amalgamation of the former towns of Grand Centre, Cold Lake and Medley (Canadian Forces Base 4 Wing), Cold Lake became a city in 2000. The three main industries in the area are military, oil and gas and tourism.
4 Wing Home to two CF-18 operational Tactical Fighter Squadrons, one Tactical Fighter Operational Training Squadron and a number of operational and support squadron units, it is the largest employer in the Cold Lake area with approximately 2000 military members and 250 civilians.
For more than 30 years, Air Forces from around the world have participated in Exercise Maple Flag, a six week NATO exercise held from mid-May to mid-June. Cold Lake's population booms by about 6000 people during these months.
Oil & Gas Industry Cold Lake sits on the southern rim of the Athabasca sands and on the northern edge of the heavy oil industry. As this industry booms in Cold Lake it will fast become the largest employment in the area.
Tourism With the lake as the focal point and the numerous other outdoor activities that are available in the area, tourism is Cold Lake’s third largest industry.
